Episode 048: Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)
Wednesday Nov 09, 2022
Wednesday Nov 09, 2022
In this episode, we kick off a block focused on Musicals to close out the year. Michael marks his formal return with his pick of Hedwig and the Angry Inch from 2001. Jason questions some of the curiously lacking details that didn't make the jump from stage to film. Dustin digs deep into the film's theme of self-acceptance and offers some alternative interpretations. Michael champions just how ahead of its time the film was. If you'd like our usual whirlwind genre overview, hop back and check out our prior episode on The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. And so much more!

Episode 047: The Sadness (2021)
Wednesday Oct 26, 2022
Wednesday Oct 26, 2022
In this episode, we wrap up our Extreme Horror extravaganza for October with a listener episode that's still on topic. Diving back into our list from the start of this block, we decided to go with a modern example of the subgenre and this led us to check out Rob Jabbaz's The Sadness from 2021. Jason seeks for the good in the film and looks at it from a perspective of celebrating gore films. Less impressed, Dustin slices the film apart while weighing it against its reputation and hype. We also return to our age old debate of what counts as a zombie film. And so much more!
Special thanks to Abe for suggesting we check this one out. Got a movie you champion? A hidden gem you think needs more love? Just want to see more discussion on a particular film? We want to check out the movies you suggest to us. Write in at genreexposure@gmail.com or contact us on your favorite form of social media and shoot us a movie recommendation.

Wednesday Oct 12, 2022
In this episode, we continue our Extreme Horror odyssey with Jason's pick taking us back to the early 80s to check out a film that trades in overt shock value for disturbing themes and ideas that will linger long after the credits roll. Join us as we check out Angst from 1983. Jason falls in love with the cinematography and champions the film's influential style. Dustin struggles to articulate why the film didn't quite work for him but finds appreciation for its many true crime connections. Wednesday Oct 05, 2022
In this episode, the Halloween season is upon us. While Michael enjoys a slight hiatus, Jason and Dustin delve down into the darkest depths to spend all month talking about Extreme Horror. Just like last year, we're coming at you with one episode a week all month long. It all kicks off with one of the most infamous and controversial horror films of all time: Srđan Spasojević's A Serbian Film from 2010. Jason navigates discussing the film's touchier subject matter. Dustin tries to understand the age old question regarding whether the film exists purely for shock or if it's a vehicle for some sort of meaningful message. Before we destroy our souls discussing the film, we spend some time giving a whirlwind overview of the subgenre as usual and share what our own personal hardest film watches have been. And so much more!

In this episode, we wrap up our focus on Indian cinema for the time being. After the highs of Tumbad and the lows of 13B, Dustin brings a quirky black comedy crime film hoping to lift his co-hosts spirits and drag the group across the finish line. Join us as we delve into Anurag Basu's Ludo from 2020. Michael has some harsh criticism for the depictions of several members among the central cast. Jason gets completely lost in the film and struggles to even discuss the plot. Dustin fights through the chaos to champion the merits that made the movie such an enjoyable experience. But before all that, we have dueling shout outs to the Star Trek franchise and the dated but still running American comic book series Spawn. And so much more!

Wednesday Sep 07, 2022
In this special bonus episode of Genre Exposure, Jason and Dustin team up to deep dive on the brand new horror film Pink Rabbit. Shot by a two-person crew on a micro-budget, Pink Rabbit is a feminist fantasy horror film that transcends its production value to deliver an enjoyably thought provoking experience. The story follows Martha during her daily work routine when an encounter with the titular Pink Rabbit plunges her into a series of bloody quests fighting her way back home to her son.
From the start, we have hoped to use the podcast as a platform to spread the love for filmmaking and so we appreciate being offered the opportunity to watch something new and also help push more eyes towards checking it out. Be sure to hit up the show notes below to follow the links so you can check out Pink Rabbit for yourself and show some love to the filmmakers. Wednesday Aug 31, 2022
Wednesday Aug 31, 2022
In this episode, we continue our exploration of Indian cinema with a blind pick from Jason leading us to check out Vikram Kumar's 13B: Fear Has a New Address (also known as Yavarum Nalam) from 2009. While normally we bank on our varied tastes and interests to lead us to differing viewpoints on a film and thus, ultimately, a more balanced discussion, this is a rare time where we all walked out in the same place. Jason struggles to find the good in the film and theorizes how the concept could have been better capitalized on. Dustin accuses the film of committing his worst sin in movie making. Michael relates his own comical struggles with finishing the movie. And so much more!
