Episode 075: Barbarian (2022)
Wednesday Nov 08, 2023
Wednesday Nov 08, 2023
In this episode, we dig into the mailbag of listener suggestions seeking some horror to keep the dwindling flames of our Halloween passion alive. This leads us to check out Zach Cregger's directorial debut Barbarian from 2022. Heads up that this is a film where the less you know going in the better, so if you haven't seen it and have made it this far without being spoiled, we highly suggest trying it before delving into our discussion. Jason celebrates the film's thematic elements while Dustin struggles to reconcile the elements he loved with those that gave him a few hangups. But before all that, we spend some extra time dishing on the VHS franchise and its latest film, V/H/S/85, which seems like a stark improvement to us over the last few entries. And so much more!
Special thanks to Jessica for suggesting we check this one out. Got a movie you champion? A hidden gem you think needs more love? Just want to see more discussion on a particular film? We want to check out the movies you suggest to us. Write in at genreexposure@gmail.com or contact us on your favorite form of social media and shoot us a movie recommendation.

Quick Cuts Episode 011: Dustin’s Halloween J-Horror Journal
Tuesday Oct 31, 2023
Tuesday Oct 31, 2023
In this special bonus episode of Genre Exposure, strapped for time but not wanting to abandon a holiday tradition, Dustin sits down solo to record some thoughts about the films he has watched over the month of October. This ultimately leads him to highlight a quartet of J-Horror flicks that became the stand outs from his daily watching for Halloween and sent him on a wild bender of watching more. While broadly discussing these four films, he also gives some general context on the mythology or urban legend underlying each movie. Nothing fancy or in depth, mostly some mad ramblings. Just a little treat to show some love for a handful of horror flicks on the day of Halloween. From all of us here at Genre Exposure, Happy Halloween!

In this episode, we continue our October celebration with more films set on or around Halloween. This time Dustin's pick takes us to the end of the 90s for Rodman Flender's cult horror comedy Idle Hands. Dustin finds it hard to struggle against his love for the movie and trying to give anything close to an objective take. Meanwhile, Jason offers a more grounded view praising where the film succeeds, but questioning some of its stumbling moments. This leads us to briefly discuss the idea of pet movies: the films you can't help but love even despite their flaws. And so much more!

Jason starts us of with, unsurprisingly, a bit of kids in peril. So join us as we check out Samuel Bodin's Cobweb from 2023. We present two wildly different takes on the film as Jason champions the movie for embodying the spirit of classic Halloween horror gems of the 70s and 80s. This leads us once more to the land of Netflix for a directorial debut feature. So join us as we check out Rubin Stein's Tin and Tina from 2023. But before all that, Dustin's enthusiasm for a paranormal documentary leaves Jason reeling as we find ourselves in a very real Mulder/Scully situation. And so much more!

In this episode, we wrap up our exploration of Nikkatsu's legendary Roman Porno series for the time being. For our last pick, Jason has selected a surprisingly relevant film blending together elements we examined in the prior two episodes. So join us as we check out Norifumi Suzuki's wild Star of David: Beautiful Girl Hunter from 1979. Dustin tries to weave the connected elements between all three films for this block while marveling at the vague profundity of the film. Jason, however, tries to articulate why the movie just falls a little short of having that special something to it. But before all that, we weigh in on Netflix's One Piece and the current state of live action anime adaptations. And so much more!

In this episode, we continue our exploration of Nikkatsu's legendary Roman Porno series. For our next pick, we checked out one of the most well-known and iconic films from the entire run. It helped spawn their own S&M focused sub-series, numerous sequels, arguably kept the company running financially, and skyrocketed Naomi Tani to eternal stardom among fans of the genre. So join us as we check out Masaru Konuma's Flower and Snake from 1974. Dustin lays down the history of this monumental film and breaks down just what kinbaku and shibari mean. Jason weighs in on the tone of the film, questioning how much of the comedy was intentional and contrasting that against our expectations going in. But before all that, sound all the alarms because the Muckverse has a new entry on the way. And so much more!
